Nikola Katic 'set for Rangers lifeline' with chance to impress in pre-season

Nikola Katic is set to be handed a Rangers lifeline this summer, according to reports.

Football Scotland report that he will be given the chance to prove himself during pre-season by boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Croatian defender is entering the final year of his current contract at Ibrox, and has spent the current campaign on loan at Hajduk Split.

It's believed they have an option to make the move for the Rangers stopper permanent, but are unlikely to trigger a transfer fee reported to be around the £3million mark.

Katic wants a return to Glasgow and it is reported he would turn down a permanent switch back to his homeland.

The 25-year-old will now get the chance to impress Van Bronckhorst over the summer months before a final decision is made on his future.

A solid return to could see him force his way into the Dutchman's plans and earn a new contract beyond next year.

It's set to be a summer of transition at Ibrox with Connor Goldson to leave on a free.

Steven Davis, who is wanted by Motherwell, Leon Balogun and Allan McGregor are just a few of the big names who are also out of contract.

A number of key players like Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo are also entering the final year of their current deals with big decisions to be made.

John Souttar is already on his way in after penning a pre-contract from Hearts.
