Nikola Katic makes Premiership title claim as Rangers star aims to make most of extra year for Euros

Nikola Katic has insisted Celtic can’t be handed nine-in-a-row because Rangers can still get back in the Premiership hunt.

The Hoops are 13 points ahead but Katic knows that the Light Blues have a game in hand and if they win that and the two remaining Old Firm games then that could be down to just four.

There is talk that Celtic could be handed the title if the season is not completed but Katic has backed his club’s stance and believes the league should be played to a close.

Katic predicted: “If the championship goes on, I don't know what the teams will be like, but we believe, because we have a match less and we play with them twice more, that it's not over yet.

“It sounds like a lot of 13 points, but I think we can get into the fight for the championship with those two games and the match less.”

The Croatian knows that Steven Gerrard’s side have really taken their eye off the ball since the winter break. Since then Celtic have gone from strength to strength and left them in their slipstream.

Katic acknowledged: “The end of the year was really top notch, we came to two points and a match less.

The row took place after Rangers beat Celtic at Parkhead in December 2019 (SNS Group)

“We got it at Celtic Park, everything was great.

“But after that we got into a crisis, we were tormented.

“Celtic, on the other hand, has been really ruthless since we got back from the break.

“They played superbly so they escaped us. We had a good situation, it was a shame we gambled.”

The other disappointment for Katic is that Euro 2020 has been delayed by 12 months and now he must set his goals on making Croatia’s squad for next summer.

Katic said: “It would be a dream come true. “Every footballer and athlete aims to represent their country, at least to me that is the highest honour.

“That is one of the main goals of my career, I will try to do my best to be there.”
