Nikola Katic handed Rangers loan exit chance with Hajduk Split keen to take defender back to Croatia

Nikola Katic is set to leave Rangers on loan and head back to Croatia.

Steven Gerrard hinted earlier this month that the defender could be leaving Ibrox temporarily in order to get the necessary game time as he comes back from a serious knee injury.

Reports of Katic being sold were shot down as the manager insisted the 24-year-old still had a

Hajduk Split are reportedly keen to take himon loan. They are currently level on points with bitter rivals Dinamo Zagreb having played a game less and want Katic to bolster their defence as they mount a title challenge.

Katic signed a contract extension in the summer that will keep him at Rangers until 2023.

But he’s been limited to B team matches so far this season and needs to play at a higher level to ensure he’s ready to feature regularly for the champions again.

Speaking earlier this month, Gerrard explained what he had in mind for the defender he signed for £1.5million three years ago.

He said: "He needs to play football and I can't guarantee him those games at the moment so we are trying to find the right solution for the boy in the short-term, but in-terms of people putting two and two together and writing his future off at Ibrox and saying that he is not in the plans or is going to be sold, I think that is wide of the mark.

"We are happy with Niko. He has had a real, serious injury over the last 12 months and more, so now, it is about how can we get him a certain number of games to get him right up to speed and in the best possible place he can be in as there is no getting away from it, it takes time to come back from that level of injury."
