Nikki Haley Warns US Is Weeks Away From $40 Trillion Debt: 'We're Leaving an Entire Generation Broke'

With the U.S. on track to cross $40 trillion in national debt within weeks, former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley accused politicians of ignoring what she called one of the biggest financial threats facing younger Americans.

Debt Nears Historic Milestone

According to the U.S. Debt Clock, the national debt currently stands at more than $39.93 trillion, leaving the country within striking distance of the $40 trillion threshold.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Haley said the U.S. is expected to hit the $40 trillion debt mark within the next two weeks, adding, “we’re leaving an entire generation broke.”

Haley called the national debt “one of the biggest problems facing young Americans right now,” adding that politicians in Washington and across the country “aren’t even discussing it.”

Rising Debt, Rising Borrowing Costs

The debt milestone comes as the 30-year U.S. Treasury bond yield has climbed above 5.2%, its highest level since 2007, amid concerns over expanding federal deficits, heavy Treasury issuance and persistent inflation.

Last week, Haley’s criticized Washington as borrowings reached $60,000 every second and paying $24 billion a week in interest, accusing lawmakers of ignoring the nation’s worsening fiscal position.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called the Democrats and Republicans “total failures”, adding that the two parties have delivered “more debt, more foreign wars” and a higher cost of living.

Debt Concerns Extend Beyond Washington

Investor and "All-In Podcast" co-host Jason Calacanis recently said that President Donald Trump was on track to add more debt during his second term than during his first, despite campaign promises to reduce the national debt.

In July, publicly held federal debt exceeded 100% of gross domestic product for the first time since 1946.

The U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio currently stands at 123.30%.
