Nike offices in Sunderland's Doxford Park remain closed after coronavirus alert

An office remains closed at Doxford Park after Nike sent staff home "out of caution".

People in hazmat suits were seen entering the sportswear company's Sunderland offices in Camberwell Way on Wednesday. And by Thursday, the offices were still deserted.

The firm has also shut its headquarters in London after a colleague returned from one of the areas hit by the Covid-19 virus.

In a statement released to the Evening Standard, Nike said: “While we have no information indicating any exposure to employees, out of caution we are conducting a deep cleaning of our offices.”

On Thursday a security guard confirmed the offices were shut.

We have contacted Nike to ask how long the Doxford Park offices will remain closed for, and whether any North East employees had travelled to areas seriously affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

However, the firm is yet to respond.

The closure came just after authorities confirmed the first case in Newcastle.

The total number of UK cases rose to 90 on Thursday. Over 3,000 have died as a result of the disease.
