Nike create new shoes to help doctors and nurses get through 12-hour shifts

Nike have created a new range of 'everyday heroes' shoes to help health care workers during their tireless work to support patients.

The Nike Air Zoom Pulse has been designed to adapt to the variety of challenges nurses, doctors, home health providers and other professionals face each day.

It aims to provide support for workers from having to stand for long periods of times to the 'hurried movement required in emergency situations', as well as being easy to slip on and off - and just as simple to clean afterwards.

Nike spent time with medical professionals at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland to learn about the variety of situations they face.

In a statement, it said: "Nurses, for example, walk approximately four to five miles and sit for less than an hour during the course of a 12-hour shift.

"The work is physically and mentally demanding.

"The design for the Air Zoom Pulse tackles those challenges with simplicity in mind. The shoe is easy to get on and off, and equally simple to clean.

"The fit, cushioning and traction systems work together to secure the foot in all hospital conditions."

A protective PU-coating has been applied to the top of the shoe, which is laceless, so it can easily be wiped or washed, and a pattern on the sole has been designed to disperse water to improve grip in all conditions.

In 2004, Nike joined together with OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to give the chance for young patients to design shoes, with profits benefiting the hopsital. It has so far raised more than $27 million.

This year, six patients have added their own designs to the collection and all profits from their creations will again be donated back to the children's hospital.

The shoe is set to be released on December 7 on Nike.com.
