Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai on Friday supported the government's plan to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission.
"We withdraw as our decisive response," Nikai said while answering questions from reporters at the LDP headquarters.
Nikai is elected to the Diet from a constituency in Wakayama Prefecture, which is famous for coastal whaling. He is also the supreme adviser for the LDP's Special Committee on Whaling.
About anti-whaling countries, Nikai openly expressed his sense of displeasure by saying: "There are countries which complain about other nations' dietary culture and show overbearing attitudes. We have warned that Japan would not be hesitant to withdraw many times, but the countries did not pay attention at all."
