NIIGATA -- Niigata city and nearby municipal governments have created a guidebook that introduces major tourist attractions of the city and central Niigata Prefecture to foreign tourists.
Titled "Niigata Trip," the guidebook features tours that span six municipalities: Niigata, Sanjo, Tsubame, Gosen, Tagami and Yahiko. It is available at tourist information centers and guest facilities in Tokyo, as well as in the Niigata area.
"We can offer more attractive round-trip tours in cooperation with other municipal governments. We want tourists visiting Tokyo to make their way out to Niigata," said an official of the domestic and international tourism division of the city.
The six municipalities made the guidebook as part of a project aimed at such things as stimulating their economies.
"Niigata Trip" has been translated into English, Korean, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese, in addition to Japanese. A total of 25,000 copies were published in late April.
The guidebook targets the increasing number of independent tourists. It introduces six one-day and overnight tours that begin at JR Niigata Station or Tsubame Sanjo Station, including a visit to the Northern Culture Museum in Niigata and an overnight stay at Yutagami hot spring in Tagami.
Also introduced is a a two-day trip featuring a visit to the Yahiko Jinja shrine on the first day and a chance to experience blacksmithing in Sanjo on the second day.
