'Nightmare' traffic as 3 months of roadworks on A52 causes large tailbacks

Roadworks lasting for three months are causing a "nightmare" for residents living on major routes to Nottingham.

The disruption started on the A52 on Monday, June 21, at the Bingham Road junction in Radcliffe-on-Trent.

Highways England is carrying out utility works at the site, ahead of proposed main highway works scheduled to take place at the junction.

One lane of the A52 is closed as part of the work, with temporary traffic lights in place and Carter Avenue is closed at the junction with the A52.

As one of the main thoroughfares into Nottingham from east of the city, residents there say traffic is backing up at peak hours and causing "long delays".

Lily Boswell, 39, of Radcliffe, said: "It's been a nightmare so far. I understand they have to do it but the 12 week timetable is crazy and is causing delays to back through the village.

"It's one of the main routes into Nottingham so it must be having a huge impact."

David Howard, 50, who has lived in the village for 10 years, added: "It's a real issue at the moment. There's lots of big vehicles coming through here. It's difficult for cars to get out their drive ways onto the main road. It's a lot of work taking place.

"Traffic is backing up all the way. It's a main arterial route for the wider city so it must be tough all over during the commute."

The delays through Radcliffe are reportedly making drivers "clog up" Gunthorpe Bridge instead to avoid the area.

Alison Hoggard, 55, of Gunthorpe, said: "The [Gunthorpe] bridge has been a nightmare for a while now what with the work taking place at Clifton Bridge.

"It's causing lots of issues as cars that usually head through Radcliffe divert north through Gunthorpe and up Epperstone bypass instead.

"Three months of work and I can only see it getting busier with more people going back to work."

Highways England say they are carrying out the works during the day in order to "complete the work as quickly and safely as possible and to keep noise disturbance to a minimum".

They say completing the work at night would lead to a longer completion time.

Highways England said in a statement: “We will be carrying these works out during the day in order to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible; and to keep noise disturbance to a minimum.

"This is because if we were to carry out these works overnight, they would take far longer to complete, having greater impacts on the local community and road users, which we felt would not have been acceptable."

Highways England is planning to make a number of improvements along the A52, including at Gamston roundabout along with the Silverdale and Stragglethorpe junctions.
