'Nightmare' as passengers left stranded at Newcastle Airport due to Storm Arwen flight delays

Passengers were left stranded at Newcastle Airport after their flight was delayed due to Storm Arwen.

A Ryanair flight was unable to take off for Malaga at 7.20pm on Friday and was rescheduled to leave on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, an Emirates flight from Newcastle to Dubai suffered delays. The plane's departure, originally scheduled at 8.05pm on Friday, was postponed until Saturday.

ChronicleLive has been told that around 50 Ryanair passengers had to spend the night at the airport.

Dawn Cheetham, 51, who was in the North East to attend a funeral, was supposed to fly back home to Spain on Friday but ended up staying overnight in the terminal.

She said passengers boarded the plane but it sat on the runway for around three hours and during that time another passenger is thought to have had an asthma attack, who was brought off the flight.

The rest of the travellers were also eventually taken off the flight.

Dawn said they stood in a taxi queue for three hours but there were unable to get a ride, and there were limited hotel spaces, which were offered as a priority to families with children and elderly people.

Around 50 were unable to get a space and were forced to stay at the airport at night, according to Dawn.

She said: "It's just been horrendous. We were stuck on a plane, we boarded and sat there for three hours. Someone took ill, they had an asthma attack and had to get off.

"After three hours, we were back in the airport and were told to queue for hotels. We were told, rightly so, they were prioritising children and the elderly.

"There were no places left. Around 50 of us had to stay in the terminal over night. The whole thing has been a nightmare."

They were told to report at the check-in desk again on Saturday morning, with the flight hoping to depart in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “This flight from Newcastle to Malaga (26 November) was delayed overnight due to severe weather conditions.

"Affected customers were notified of the delay and received subsequent updates by SMS text message and the Ryanair app.

"The majority of passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and transport, however, due to limited availability of accommodation, some passengers remained at the airport and were provided with food & drink vouchers. This flight departed to Malaga at 13.01 local time today.

"Ryanair sincerely apologised to all customers affected by this weather delay, which was entirely beyond our control."

Storm Arwen battered the North East on Friday night, with major disruption also caused on roads and rail services.
