Nightclub punters dance in chairs showing what future of clubbing could look like

In nightclubs around the world, once-packed dance floors have remained empty for months.

Venues globally were forced to shut as the coronavirus prevented punters from clubbing.

Typically, all the behaviours associated with a night out contravene all social distancing guidelines.

But as lockdown restrictions ease, bosses of clubs have been forced to reckon with a new era.

No kissing, no close contact, sensible drinking and two metres between all attendees.

In some cases, dance floors have been closed off in favour of tables and chairs for attendees to sit instead.

Now, we've been given an insight into how clubs may run in the future - after one club in the Netherlands reopened its doors.

It was more Sit -urday Night Fever for clubbers at Doornroosje, in Nijmegen, Gelderland, where people had to book for just a 20 minute slot.

And instead of dancing, clubbers were ordered to sit on chairs in order to keep five foot apart.

Promoter Jonatan Brand said: "It’s still very cool. People are still dancing, although they are on chairs.

"They’re fist-pumping, they’re moving their bodies — it’s great."

Only thirty guests were allowed at a time in compliance with public health guidelines, although this is set to increase to 100.

The DJ sets did not sell out, and the event was also streamed online.

The event took place in the middle of the day rather than beginning at midnight as it usually would.

Koos Hornman, the club's marketing manager, told Insider: "For us, this was all about bringing artists and visitors together again, making them happy with some live music.

"Part of it is also a statement of how this 'new normal' [changes] the nightlife scene.

"Sitting in this setting is, and looks, very strange.

"However, people really enjoyed being in our venue again and just having a little taste of the atmosphere and the loud music."
