Nightclub inspired by the hanging gardens of Babylon to open in Durham city

A new nightclub inspired by one of the seven wonders of the ancient world is set to open in Durham city.

Party goers will enter an incredible garden based on the hanging gardens of Babylon when they enter the city's newest late night venue, Babylon.

Now under the management of Northumberland Taverns, the nightspot is expected to open at the end of September in the former historic cinema on North Road.

Punters can expect to be taken to the ancient gardens, which were a paradise of ascending tiered gardens with variety of trees, shrubs, and vines that were built on present day Hillah, Babil, in Iraq.

It is the latest business venture to open after previously being Australian-themed pub Walkabout and then a Chinese buffet.

Andy Fenwick, operations manager of Northumberland Taverns, said: "We are opening in two stages. firstly the venue opens at the back end of September, with a VIP launch.

"We will be serving the some of the finest cocktails in Durham along with VIP packages & cocktail master classes.

"Along with this we will be running weekly club nights and will be showing Sky Sports & BT Sports on the biggest screens in Durham.

"The club nights will host some amazing shows including sax, bongos, on stage dancers and pyrotechnics."

Stage two of the project is expected to be finished in February, with the introduction of a food menu, Andy said.

"Food will include sharer plates, pizzas, burgers, salads with a host of special dishes. We will also have a vegan and vegetarian menus," he said.
