Night turns to day as fireball blazes across the sky in snowbound Lapland

A time-lapse camera has captured eerie footage of a "fireball" lighting up the winter night sky over Finland's northernmost region, Lapland.

When Tony Bateman set up his camera to record the northern lights, he suddenly heard a loud bang, followed by what looked like a fireball blazing across the sky.

Jyrki Manninen, a physicist at Finland's University of Oulu, said the object was likely a meteor.

But he said it could also have been a piece of space junk re-entering the atmosphere, according to a local report.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company reported that other people in Lapland also witnessed the event, with "loud bangs" heard over a radius of a few hundred kilometres.
