'Night to remember' as enormous bonfire lit in Birkenhead

An enormous bonfire has stunned onlookers after being lit giving residents a "night to remember," one witness said.

Preparations for the huge structure have been put in place all day in Birkenhead , as those living locally to the area were seen clambering up and down dropping off items for the pile.

Stunning footage shows the huge bonfire alight as fireworks are let off overhead.

Crowds of people listening to music and enjoying the annual bonfire could also be seen.

Sharon Jones said it was a "great bonfire night to remember".

Ms Jones said: "We may have a bad name around here, but when it comes to community we pull together.

"The local community have been putting the bonfire all day. Everyone is there to have fun, a little dance [and] music was supplied by a local house."

The spectacular show comes as another resident expressed worry earlier in the day about the potential size of the blaze.

They said: "[My worry is] safety if anything.

"There were vans and cars lining up, dropping all their rubbish off and kids were climbing to the stop to stack sofas.

“If they set that on fire with the sofas being unstable, then a sofa could drop on one of them and if it was on fire well then he’d be in trouble.”

Ms Jones said she did not see the police or Mersey Fire Brigade and "everyone was enjoying themselves".

The bonfire is understood to take place every year and Merseyside Fire and Rescue have been informed of its occurrence again this year.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) said: “We want to ensure everyone has a good time this Bonfire Night but that they also remain safe."
