Night out in Newcastle proves costly for drunk man who smashed shop window

A night out in Newcastle proved to be an expensive affair for this man.

George Armstrong was out with his friends and had been drinking when he decided to smash a shop window on Mosley Street, in the city centre, in the middle of the night.

He then made off from the scene in a car but was tracked down after police were called.

The 21-year-old, of Southward Way, Holywell, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage when he appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court and he was ordered to pay £1,070.

Prosecutor Rebecca Gibson said a man working at Quayside News heard a loud bang at around 12.30am on September 12.

He went outside and saw the store's front window had been smashed.

"He was approached by a taxi driver who said he saw the defendant pick up a cash machine sign and damage the window with it," said Ms Gibson.

"The defendant ran off and got into a Ford Focus. The witness provided the registration number and the police were called."

The court was told that Armstrong was given an opportunity to pay £950 to the shop owner and receive a caution but he didn't make the payment.

Ms Gibson added: "It was decided that if he agreed to pay for the damage caused, he could go down the community resolution route.

"But when it came to it, he did not pay the figure requested."

In a statement to the court, the shop's owner said: "I'm not a large company. I'm a small local business and this type of incident will have a significant impact on my outgoings and will affect me financially."

Alan Brown, defending, said the incident was "madness without any method".

He added: "Mr Armstrong was out with friends that night. He had a drink, had too much to drink. That clearly played a part.

"He thought it would be a good idea to do this.

"He had never done it before and has never done it subsequently. This was not targeted in any way. It was just madness without any method behind it."

Mr Brown said the defendant was initially prepared to pay for the damage caused but felt the £950 figure was excessive.

He also said his client had suffered from depression and anxiety and had recently been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.

Armstrong, who has no previous convictions, was ordered to pay the £950 in compensation as well as a £120 fine.
