Night of drunken chaos in Bristol suburb as teens attacked hours before lockdown

Violence broke out in Staple Hill on the night before the second coronavirus lockdown.

Two teens suffered head injuries last night (November 4) in the suburb, where police issued a dispersal notice at at 10.45pm.

An Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman described "a number of reports of drunken anti-social behaviour and disorder".

A dispersal order allows officers to force groups of non-residents to leave an area. Last night it covered High Street, Broad Street, Page Road and Page Park.

"It was brought in after officers responded to reports of a large group of people smashing bottles, shouting and swearing," the force spokeswoman said.

"Officers were first called just before 10pm to reports of a disturbance in Broad Street and remained in the area until about 11.40pm to ensure the groups had dispersed."

Police are investigating two reported assaults in the area during that time.

"In Broad Street a 16-year-old boy suffered facial injuries after being punched to the ground by a stranger," the spokeswoman added.

"The male suspect was described as possibly having a facial tattoo and carrying a Tesco bag.

"In High Street officers detained a teenage man after an 18-year-old man was assaulted and needed hospital treatment for a cut to his head.

"The teenager will be interviewed in due course."

One witness posted to social media she had seen "police everywhere, lots of cop cars and riot vans, broken glass everywhere", after 10pm in Staple Hill.

In September, Bristol Live reported on residents’ claims of regular drunken night-time violence on Staple Hill High Street.

Last month, we revealed South Gloucestershire Council's decision to bring in weekend night marshals to patrol Staple Hill and stop drinkers breaching Covid rules.

Anyone with information, dashcam or phone footage of last night's incidents should call 101 quoting reference 5220250012 (Broad Street incident) or 5220250028 (High Street incident).
