Nigerian football club's bus attacked by robbers who left players 'critically injured'

A bus transporting a Nigerian Premier League football team was attacked by armed robbers leaving several players 'critically injured'.

As reported by the BBC , FC Ifeanyi Ubah were on their way to an away fixture against Jigawa Golden Stars in Kano in the north of the Nigeria.

But their bus was shot at by the robbers in Lokoja, which is capital of the central state Kogi, at around 1:30pm on Friday.

Pictures show one bullet even passed through the centre of the bus windscreen.

A club statement said: "The driver was shot while some members of the coaching crew and players were critically injured.

"The affected persons are currently being treated and are responding to treatment.

"We wish to use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government as well as football regulatory bodies Nigerian Football Federation(NFF) and the League Management Company (LMC) to further intensify security efforts to ensure the safety of teams who often have no choice than to travel long distances by road, especially clubs owned by Private investors who are made to invest their hard earned money in the growth and development of Nigerian football."

Ifeanyi Ubah was only founded in 2015, and the team are currently mid-table in the division.

It is not the first instance of this nature in Nigeria, following a 2015 attack which saw five Kano Pillars players shot whilst travelling to Owerri.

There was another similar incident less than a year later, as another Premier League team Enyimba's bus was attacked whilst heading to a pre-season tournament.

Due to the economic issues in Nigeria, clubs have been forced to make longer and more treacherous journeys by road in order to reduce costs.

Other teams, including Ikorodu and Akwa United, have also had accidents on the road whilst on their way to away fixtures.
