Nigerian befriends man on Facebook, dupes him of Rs 60L

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand cyber cell nabbed a 45-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Olive, on Wednesday for allegedly duping a man from Ranikhet of Rs 60 lakh on the pretext of gifting him $1 lakh after befriending him on Facebook through a fake profile of a foreign woman. Olive was nabbed from a rented accommodation in Delhi’s Safdarjung area where he was allegedly staying without proper visa and travel-related documents.

Ankush Mishra, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), state cyber cell told TOI that Olive was nabbed during the probe of a fraud case registered on the complaint of a man, Suresh Arya, who alleged that he was duped of Rs 60 lakh by the accused.

“The accused befriended Arya through a fake Facebook profile of a foreign woman. Subsequently, Olive told him that he wants to gift him $1 lakh in foreign currency and asked Arya to transfer money for custom duty, IMF charges, insurance bond, NEFT-RTGS charge, KYC charge and other duties to his bank accounts,” said Mishra.

The DSP further said that after receiving the amount, Olive deleted the fake Facebook account and blocked Chauhan's number on his mobile phone and WhatsApp. “After failing to contact him, Chauhan realised that he was duped by a cyber scamster. He then lodged a complaint with the cyber police station in the Kumaon division.,” he said
