Nigel Pearson to miss Bristol City's trips to Millwall and Peterborough United due to COVID

Nigel Pearson will not be on the touchline for Bristol City's Championship clash at Millwall on Wednesday night or at Peterborough United on Saturday.

The club has confirmed that the manager has returned a positive Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test for Covid-19 and will self-isolate for 10 days as per Public Health England guidelines.

Pearson did not take press conference duties on Monday as assistant manager Curtis Fleming spoke to the media instead and the former Middlesbrough right-back will now take charge of the team for the next two fixtures.

Bristol City said in a statement: "Nigel has not had any sustained close contact with the playing squad since last Saturday (September 25) and no player or other staff member is affected."

City CEO Richard Gould added that: “I’m sure that everyone at the club and our supporters hope that Nigel has a speedy and full recovery.

"In the meantime Curtis will take charge. He has been in regular contact with Nigel and we wish him and the team all the best against Millwall tomorrow."

Pearson suffered with COVID-19 last year, prior to taking over at Ashton Gate, and at one stage was unable to get out of bed.

"I had some heart issues, and then joint issues... it was a difficult time," Pearson explained of that time.

"Through August and September, I was particularly unwell for sure. But the medication I'm on now is certainly helping a lot, and there'll be a lot of people out there experiencing the same."

Former City boss Steve Cotterill also suffered from the virus earlier this year and was absent from the sidelines at Shrewsbury Town towards the end of last season, before emotionally talking through his recovery and time spent in hospital at Bristol.

Bristol Live wishes Pearson a swift recovery as the Robins head to London to play their matchday 10 game against Millwall on Wednesday evening.
