Nigel Pearson explains what he’s looking for in new signings for Bristol City this summer

Bristol City have 13 players out of contract in the summer as they look to build a squad capable of competing with the top six next year.

The Robins achieved Championship safety at the weekend without having to kick a ball, as Derby County lost at home to Birmingham City, but conversations on the makeup of the roster of players for 2021/22 is taking place.

And manager Nigel Pearson has explained what he is looking for as those plans are made - though the club has yet to confirm a long-term appointment in the dugout.

Pearson was speaking to BBC Radio Bristol following Sunday's 3-2 loss to Luton Town, an eighth defeat in the last nine home games at Ashton Gate. If in charge beyond this season, he knows what he wants.

"I've said before that I want people who share the accountability, they have ownership of what they do, care about the team and if they don't they can go," he said.

"I strongly believe that we need some fresh blood within the place who have more stronger characters, both in terms of their mentality and basically players who do what they're supposed to do out on the field.

"At the moment I can't honestly say we're in a place where we can deliver anything other than a 95-minute performance where it goes from one end of the spectrum to the other. And that's just a realistic assessment of where we are.

"We need to have a robust competitive squad which has some moral fibre to it," Pearson also added, to expand. "There's a lot of work to be done both on the field and off the field."

Bristol City now head to Millwall and host Brentford in their final two games of the season.
