Nigel Owens turns up with wrong boots, rollocks players for cheering opponent's mistake and then puts 'd***s' straight on Twitter

Nigel Owens had an eventful night as he returned to PRO14 refereeing duties in Belfast on Monday.

The Welsh referee initially had a shock in the changing room ahead of kick-off when he realised he'd brought two odd right boots with him from Wales.

Owens had to turn to assistant referee Frank Murphy to lend him a pair before kick-off of the Ulster v Glasgow match.

When things got under way, he was forced to dish out a signature rollockng to a group of Ulster players who clapped and cheered after a Glasgow player made a mistake.

The players had celebrated and made a scene as a Glasgow player knocked on late in the game, and Owens didn't like what he saw one bit.

"There's a few of you. That is not acceptable in this game. If somebody makes a mistake we just get on with it. We don't clap and cheer, ok?

"I'm going to let it go this time but I don't want to see it happen again. Not in this game."

Following the match, Owens received the usual mixture of high praise and criticism, such is the life of a referee.

One fan questioned the decision to castigate the players, with Owens responding: "It’s not in the spirit of the game. I don’t accept it when I referee. I can’t answer for others and other matches."

Another viewer said on Twitter: "Loves the sound of his own voice. Needs to wise up. Comes across like a bit of a d*** sometimes."

Owens was swift to respond, saying: "Not as much of a d*** as you obviously. You're following me so you like following d***s then I take it? Mmmm, you're an odd one. No, jog on muppet."

Owens also took on one or two other critics, correcting one fan who accused him of not giving any offside penalties in the match.

Owens will make history this autumn by becoming the first person to referee 100 Test matches.

Seventeen years after making his international debut, Owens will reach the milestone when he takes charge of France's Autumn Nations Cup clash against Italy on November 28.
