Nigel Owens' touching six-word tribute to Ireland's Rory Best during Rugby World Cup game as captain played for the last time

Welsh referee Nigel Owens has become famous for his one-liners, many of which go viral.

Often it is a ticking off, which is invariably respected by the player on the receiving end and which fans across the world love.

But it was a simple six-word message to Irish rugby legend Rory Best which will have captivated many TV viewers as Ireland were hammered 46-14 by New Zealand in their World Cup quarter-final showdown in Tokyo.

With his team trailing 34-0, Best was replaced in the 62nd minute by Munster's Niall Scannell.

It was Best's last moment on a rugby pitch because at the age of 37 he is calling time on his glittering career.

But even though he was clearly distraught at Ireland bombing out of the World Cup, Best will have been touched by Owens' comment as he was being substituted.

Despite the intensity of refereeing a World Cup quarter-final showdown, Owens still found time to break off to say 'Well done on an excellent career' as the hooker started to trudge off.

Owens was referring to 15 years at the top level which saw Best make more than 200 appearances for Ulster, play 123 times for Ireland and go on two Lions tours.

Best received an ovation from the fans inside the stadium, but couldn't bring himself to raise a hand with Ireland being thrashed so heavily.

ITV co-commentator Alan Quinlan, the former Ireland back-rower, said: "Rory got a nice reaction coming off at the end of a wonderful career in which he has achieved so much."
