Nigel Owens tells his own officials to 'switch on' after strange mistake leaves everyone confused

Referee Nigel Owens was at the centre of a bizarre moment during Saturday's PRO14 quarter-final play-off match between Munster and Benetton.

Owens awarded Munster a penalty 11 minutes into the match after an infringement at a ruck inside the Italians' 22.

But, as Munster outside-half Tyler Bleyendaal began his run up to kick three points, Owens stopped him in his tracks after getting a message from TMO Ian Davies.

It transpired Owens had actually awarded the penalty in the wrong place, mistaking the line 15 metres in from the touchline for the 5 metre line, where the actual offence took place.

After realising the error Owens told Bleyendaal: "Wait a minute, the penalty is here, not here."

It meant Munster faced a far more difficult kick having been moved 10 metres closer to the touchline, and the decision drew initial jeers from the home supporters at Thomond Park.

However, Owens quickly gave Munster the option to reassess whether they still wanted to go for goal or kick to touch instead. Captain Peter O'Mahony duly arrived on the scene and opted for the kick to the corner.

Benetton captain Tommaso Allen was confused by it all, questioning whether Owens was allowed to do what he had just done.

The Welshman swiftly responded: "Yes, it is quite within the law because I gave the wrong mark. They have the right to change their mind and have gone for the corner."

Premier Sports' TV microphones then picked up Owens pointedly telling his fellow Welsh assistants, Ben Whitehouse and Dan Jones, to 'switch on, boys' after neither of them noticed his mistake.

Munster eventually won the game, holding on for a narrow 15-13 victory after JJ Hanrahan kicked a late penalty.
