Nigel Owens named as referee for Ireland v New Zealand in Rugby World Cup quarter-final

Nigel Owens will be take charge of Ireland's Rugby World Cup quarter-final clash with New Zealand this weekend.

The Welsh referee has been named as the man to take charge of the last eight match at the Tokyo Stadium in the Japanese capital.

He will be assisted by France's Pascal Guazere and Australia’s Angus Gardner, with Graham Hughes of England the television match official.

The referees for the other three quarter-finals have also been named.

Jerome Garces will be the man in the middle for England v Australia on Saturday, while South African Jaco Peyper takes charge of Wales v France on Sunday and Wayne Barnes is the official for Japan v South Africa.

A World Rugby statement read: "The selection has been made following a full review of the 37 pool matches that delivered unforgettable moments and superb rugby at Asia’s first Rugby World Cup. The selection was made on merit by World Rugby’s match officials selection committee.

"While match official performance will undoubtedly be in the spotlight at a time when World Rugby and the global rugby community continues to encourage behaviour change for high-risk tackles, clear, consistent and accurate decision-making characterised the pool phase performances."
