Nigel Owens handed another honour as referees are allocated matches at the World Cup

Nigel Owens will have the honour of refereeing the opening match of the Rugby World Cup.

The popular Welshman, who controlled the 2015 final between winners New Zealand and Australia at Twickenham, takes charge of hosts Japan's clash with Lyn Jones and Shaun Connor coached Russia at Tokyo Stadium on September 20.

Owens will also referee the big Pool C clash between England and Argentina, Italy versus Kingsley Jones coached Canada and the United States against Tonga.

Wales opening match in Pool D, against Georgia at the City of Toyota Stadium on September 23, will be handled by English official Luke Pearce.

Romain Poite officiates the heavyweight meeting with Australia, his French colleague Jerome Garces referees the match with dangerous Fiji and Australian Angus Gardner Wales' group finale with minnows Uruguay on October 12.

World Rugby will name its match officials for the quarter-finals following the pool stage.
