Nigel Farage says he is hoping for snow to keep Labour voters from the polls

Nigel Farage has said he is hoping that rain or snow will keep people away from the polls, as his party braces for a heavy defeat.

The Brexit Party leader warned that a Tory majority would plunge the country "back into crisis by May next year" as he campaigned in a series of Labour strongholds in Doncaster yesterday.

He said he had a "hunch" that turnout will be low on Thursday, partly because of the weather and because people are being asked to vote "again and again".

Mr Farage said: "I'm hoping for very, very heavy rain in Doncaster tomorrow, or snow, whatever we can muster.

"I know that people who are going to vote for us will turn out, because they absolutely believe in our message."

Speaking to a small group of party activists before heading out campaigning, the ex-UKIP leader branded the general election campaign "abysmal" and said Brexit Party candidates have been subject torrents of abuse online and in person.

Mr Farage's party have struggled to gain traction in this election campaign after standing down in 317 seats won by the Tories in 2017.

The party's focus on Labour seats may not prove successful with YouGov's MRP mega-poll predicting the party won't pick up a single seat.

But Mr Farage is defiant and said that regardless of Friday morning's result the Brexit Party will continue.

Party insiders remain confident they pull of an upset in some seats.

Tory chiefs are worried that people backing Farage could cost them up to 50 seats across the country.

Out campaigning in Ed Miliband's seat, a perfect example of that Tory fear walked up and shook Mr Farage's hand.

Keith Oades, 79, a Tory canvasser out delivering Tory leaflets told Nigel Farage he had already voted for the Brexit Party.

Mr Farage told the Mirror regardless of the result he wouldn't be going anywhere.

He said: "This time last year I was pondering packing it all in, but since then I have formed a party which ousted the worst Prime Minister this country has ever had.

"I've been going for 25 years, so I'm not going to stop now."
