Nigel Farage says Brexit celebration party will go ahead in Parliament Square on January 31

Nigel Farage has announced that Leave Means Leave has secured permission to hold a "Brexit Celebration" in Parliament Square on January 31.

The arch Brexiteer has long called for such an event, claiming he and other eurosceptics were planning a £100,000 party for Brexit day.

He previously said this plan had met "resistance" but today said permission for a celebration was granted.

"Leave Means Leave have been given approval to hold an event in Parliament Square on 31st January," he tweeted.

"Great news! It is a big moment in the history of this nation to celebrate."

Richard Tice, the chairman of Mr Farage's Brexit Party, tweeted: "I am delighted to confirm that Leave Means Leave has secured approval from the authorities for the Brexit Day celebration in Parliament Sq on 31 Jan. We are still working on Big Ben and fireworks!"

A Greater London Authority spokesman told the Standard: “GLA officials have given provisional authorisation for an event to take place on Parliament Square on January 31.”

It comes amid Brexiteer calls for Big Ben to ring out to mark the timing of Brexit, which would be 11pm on January 31.

It is said this would cost around £500,000 - with the PM suggesting crowdfunders could potentially raise the money.
