Nigel Farage was mocked by anti-Brexit campaigners on Saturday after his speech was interrupted by footage of him endorsing Roy Moore, a failed and highly controversial US Senate candidate.
The former UKIP leader was addressing pro-Brexit demonstrators at the March to Leave, which will see around 50 protesters walk from Sunderland to central London in 14 days.
The so-called “Brexit betrayal march” began on 16 March and protesters have been met throughout their route by Led by Donkeys, an anti-Brexit group determined to expose what they describe as Mr Farage’s ”hypocrisy”.
“We want to accompany this march with two advertising vans for the whole route,” Led By Donkeys announced in a fundraising campaign set up earlier this month.
“These digital billboards will be everywhere the marchers go, reminding them of the lies and hypocrisy of Nigel Farage.”
The group raised over £30,000 in four days to fund its protest campaign.
When Mr Farage addressed pro-Brexit marchers on Saturday morning, the campaigners played footage of the former UKIP leader endorsing Roy Moore.
Mr Moore, a former US judge, became the first Republican to lose a Senate race in Alabama for more than 20 years last year.
Multiple women have accused him of sexually assaulting them while they were teenagers. Mr Moore denies the allegations.
Mr Farage campaigned for the controversial former judge in September 2017, before the accusations emerged.
At a rally outside of the city of Mobile in September 2017, the Brexit campaigner talked about how electing Mr Moore would send a message to the political establishment and the liberal media.
The former UKIP leader later voiced doubts over the timing of the accusations against Mr Moore while speaking to The Independent.
“I have to say how, for someone who has been in public life, [these issues] have not been raised before,” he said in November 2017.
“He has been in the public life a long time and he has been outspoken in his views and in his positions.”
Led By Donkeys have also placed billboards taking aim at Mr Farage on the March to Leave route.
They are also playing clips of the anti-elitist politician admitting to using a private jet.
Mr Farage’s March to Leave continues. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of protesters are attending an anti-Brexit march in central London on Saturday.
