Nigel Farage is hit by milkshake while campaigning for Brexit Party in Newcastle

Nigel Farage was today struck by a milkshake while campaigning, the latest election candidate to be given a soaking in a trend of protest attacks.

The Brexit Party leader was visiting Newcastle ahead of the European elections on Thursday, reports the Chronicle Live .

Despite being surrounded by security and activists, a protester was able to hit Farage with a milkshake.

Chronicle Live reporter, Sean Seddon, reported that Farage said to his security "it's a failure," and asked "how did that happen?"

The Press Association reported that a 32-year-old man from Newcastle had told journalists he was responsible for throwing the milkshake.

He said: "I didn't know he was in town, I thought this is my only chance. It's a right of protest against people like him.

"The bile and the racism he spouts out in this country is far more damaging than a bit of milkshake to his front."

Several candidates have been targeted in similar protest in recent weeks. UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin has had a milkshake thrown at him four times.

Two days ago police asked McDonald's restaurants in Edinburgh to halt sales of milkshakes when Farage was due to deliver a speech in the city - to prevent any further 'milkshakings'.

However, the protester in Newcastle said he had purchased the milkshake from Five Guys, that it was a salted caramel flavour and had cost £5.25.
