Nigel Farage gets caught up in the 'cob vs bap' debate on a visit to Notts

We've seen lots of issues debated in Nottinghamshire during the General Election campaign, from Brexit and taxation to immigration and the NHS.

But Wednesday was probably the first time the most crucial  issue of the whole election was addressed: Should a small, round piece of bread be called a cob, a bap or a roll?

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage was put on the spot when visiting Sutton-in-Ashfield on the campaign trail.

In a café near Ladbrokes in the town, local candidate Martin Daubney mentioned an earlier conversation he had had with Mr Farage about whether it should be called a cob or a bap.

The brief encounter ends with a kiss (Martin Daubney)

Mr Farage tells a woman in the café that his own view is that it's a bap.

But the woman then firmly tells him: "It's a cob."

She then adds: "And if you say 'cob, we'll vote for you'."

The Brexit Part leader says no more on the subject. Instead, the pair exchange kisses before Mr Farage leaves.

There's no doubt that all the parties involved in the battle for Ashfield constituency - which has a majority of just 441 and no existing MP standing - are keen to get the support of as many voters as possible.

But perhaps saying 'cob' rather than 'bap' was just a step too far.

The other candidates in Ashfield are:

Lee Anderson, Conservative

Natalie Fleet, Labour

Becky Wain, Liberal Democrat

Rose Woods, Green Party

Jason Zadrozny, Ashfield Independents
