Nigel de Jong heaps praise on Man City star for classy display vs Burnley

Former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has heaped praise on Rodri for his star performance against Burnley.

The Spaniard put in his best performance since returning from a hamstring injury as City beat the Clarets 4-1 at Turf Moor.

That moved Pep Guardiola's men back up to second place, eight points behind league-leaders Liverpool ahead of the remaining midweek Premier League fixtures.

It was a stylish performance from the champions, with Rodri at the heart of it as the midfield pivot, pulling the string from deep.

After Gabriel Jesus had put City two goals ahead, Rodri capped off a fantastic display with a thunderous strike from the edge of the area, before Riyad Mahrez added a fourth.

"I think I have one or two months adaptation, now I think it will be the best version of me," Rodri admitted after the match, speaking to Amazon Prime TV.

It was a performance that caught the eye of former City midfield anchor de Jong, who waxed lyrical about a Rodri after the full-time whistle.

"He was just amazing, the way he read the game today," de Jong, who won one Premier League title and an FA Cup during his time in Manchester, said.

"He picked up players, second balls, he made two great tackles. Here he is reading the situation and for me to see that, I played in the same position, so I love seeing performances like this, it's just about reading the game, having a sense of where the ball is coming.

"This is one of the best performances I've seen from him. I think so (it's a turning point) because after the questions City have had this week after their performance this weekend, it's a great game for him, personally as well.

"It also shows the rest of the team 'hey, you can count on me, I'm here for the defence and I will help you guys out'. It's a great performance overall but especially for Rodri, I love to see it."
