Nigel de Jong explains why Man City prefer to win Champions League over Premier League

Former Man City midfielder Nigel de Jong has claimed that if the club had to pick between winning the UEFA Champions League or the Premier League this season, they would choose the former.

City have dominated the league over the past few years, chasing their fourth title in five years and are in a healthy position to do so with 17 games left.

But they are yet to win European football's top prize at club level.

Last season saw them reach the final of the competition but were beaten 1-0 by English-rivals Chelsea, the closest they have become to lifting the trophy.

Manager Pep Guardiola has won the Champions League twice in his career, both with Barcelona against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

Having conquered England and on their way to doing it again, City will want to overcome their Champions League jinx and if given a choice between the two prestigious trophies at the end of the season, De Jong believes there is 'only one answer.'

"You already know," De Jong replied when asked on beIN SPORTS whether City would rather win the Premier League or UEFA Champions League. "There's only one answer, that's the Champions League by a country mile.

"I think that's the one City are still chasing, I think that's the one that slipped out of their hands last year and if they could have a choice, and there is a choice for them, they have to make a decision between the two choices it will be the Champions League."

When it was put to him by the pundits that City have a healthy lead in the league, they are currently 10 points clear of second-placed Chelsea and 11 ahead of Liverpool, De Jong added that ideally City would make a play for both trophies.

"I would go for both. Nevertheless, I would go for all the prizes, but he [Richard Keys] asked me the question 'if I had the choice'."
