Nigel Clough confirms Burton Albion have rejected a bid for Sunderland target Liam Boyce

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has confirmed the club have rejected a bid for Sunderland target Liam Boyce.

The 28-year-old striker came off the bench to provide the assist for the Ryan Edwards' dramatic late winner against Fleetwood Town on Saturday.

Boyce is out of the contract in the summer and while the Brewers are set to offer him a fresh deal, a transfer before the window shuts could be considered.

Speaking to Burton Albion's club website following the victory, Clough said: “It’s the same with everybody here that if a club comes in with the right offer then we look at it. That hasn’t changed in 20 years.

"We have had a bit of interest generally and one bid we have rejected. That’s as far it has gone so far."

It is not known which club lodged the bid, but Sunderland are know to hold an interest in the Northern Ireland international.

The Black Cats have already brought in Kyle Lafferty on a short-term deal and while Phil Parkinson played down speculation of a move for Gary Madine following the victory over Wycombe Wanderers, the manager is still believed to be in the market for another attacker.

Boyce's name was one of several put to the Black Cats boss in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Parkinson said: "Liam is under contract at Burton but is a good player, scores goals at this level but obviously is under contract so is a difficult one of me to speak on."
