NIFL recommendation on how to complete season expected by June 30

A recommendation on how to complete this season's NI Football League will be made before June 30.

NIFL says it continues to support the "continued desire" of member clubs to conclude the current campaign on the pitch.

In a statement, the league said on Friday that any decision made would be subject to protecting the health and wellbeing of those involved and ensuring financial stability of clubs.

It will also preserve the sporting integrity of the leagues.

All football in Northern Ireland has been suspended since early March.

Doubts remain over whether this season can be completed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

All football is suspended until May 31 at the earliest, with the NI Executive's five-step recovery plan and Sport NI's subsequent framework document highlighting a lengthy wait before contact sports can return.

The NI Football League hasn't been rushed into any quick decision on this season, and will continue to consult with its members clubs.

Seven rounds of fixtures remain in this season's Danske Bank Premiership with Linfield four points ahead of Coleraine at the top of the table.

NIFL said the June 30 deadline will allow for "due diligence" and appraisal of the options on how to bring the season to a conclusion.

"It has been agreed that the Steering Group fully appraises the ‘season end’ options for all leagues and makes a recommendation to the NIFL Board by 30 June 2020," read a NIFL statement.

It added: "This process will include further consultation in advance of June 30, with all member clubs, to ensure all views are considered."

The league and Irish FA is continuing to liaise with UEFA in respect of nominating clubs to participate in next season's European club competitions.

The steering group will consult with all key stakeholders to contribute into the nomination process.

NIFL said it will continue to make "more informed decison-making" following a progress review of the current NI Executive plans, and consider the impact of Sport NI’s framework guide towards a resumption of sport and the Irish FA’s proposed Return to Train and Return to Play protocols.

"The Board, along with key stakeholders, is responsible for ensuring all options are fully researched and considered," the statement added.

"We again thank our member clubs, supporters, sponsors and the media for their continuing patience and understanding during these unprecedented times."
