Nier: Automata is getting an anime adaptation

Fans aching for more Nier: Automata will be happy to hear that an anime adaptation is in the works.

Announced during Nier: Automata’s fifth anniversary steam on Wednesday, Square Enix is partnering with Aniplex to turn the hit action RPG into an animated series. Details beyond this are shaky, all we know for sure is characters 2B, 9S, and A2 will be in the series, and it’ll be a retelling of the game’s story.

There’s no word on who’ll be directing the show or how much oversight there’ll be from Nier: Automata’s creators at Platinum Games (if there’s any at all). Square Enix did share a brief teaser for the anime, which you can watch below.

A couple of pieces of beautiful concept artwork were shown off as well.

Even though there’s no information on what animation studio is tackling this, Aniplex has a strong track record as an anime production company. Some of its more critically-acclaimed shows include Fullmetal Alchemist, Sword Art Online, Madoka Magica, and the Monogatari series.

Hopefully, Square Enix will let us in on more extensive details soon, though judging from how little information there is now, the ink on this deal is probably still wet. Much like film adaptations, video games rarely make for a solid anime series.
