Niels Nkounkou nears deadline day move as Everton defender takes medical

Niels Nkounkou is undergoing a medical with Standard Liege ahead of a deadline day move.

The 20-year-old is closing in on a season-long loan switch to the Belgian side.

Everton 's young left-back joined the club last July on a three-year-deal and a loan move this season has been in the works for some time.

Nkounkou received offers from sides in the Championship but a temporary move to Liege was the most appealing and his transfer is expected to go through before the window closes this evening.

Liege are not paying a loan fee to secure Nkounkou for the season. The agreement also does not include any option for the Jupiler League side to buy Nkounkou next summer.

The departure of Nkounkou will leave Rafa Benitez's first-team with only one recognised left-back, although Ben Godfrey showed last season he can deputise in that position.

Everton's under-23s were also looking to find left-back reinforcements in this window but, as of last night, there was dwindling hope of any incomings.
