Nicole Turner wins silver in 50m Butterfly in Tokyo in stunning performance

Nicole Turner has won a silver medal in Tokyo in the 50 metre butterfly.

Turner impressed earlier in the day in her heat and stunned in her 50m final.

The Laois woman was tipped for a medal going into the final and stunned to secure Ireland's fourth medal of the Paralympic Games.

Swimming out of Lane 5, Turner was always going to struggle to win gold with a world record set earlier in the day but the Laois woman swam strong for the entire 50 metres.

And Turner was ecstatic after her silver medal swim.

Speaking to RTE, she said: "It hasn't sunk in at all. Coming into Tokyo on the back of Rio being so close to a bronze medal, the aim after Tokyo was to just get on the podium.

"I never in a million years thought it would be silver, i thought it was always be fighting for bronze.

"I was shaking before the race even started to be honest but the past five years have been pretty challenging.

"Even coming into this thing I aimed high but to be honest to reach the podium now with the competitiveness in there it's not sunk in"

And Turner promised that she will message her mam more after her silver medal swim.

"I message my brothers because we have a group chat and I have the odd reply for that and then she's like 'how do you have time to reply to them and not for me' but I'm done now so she can ask me all she wants"

"Honestly this is the best day of my life, I never thought to even get to Tokyo this year but to be on the podium and a silver medal it is for everyone at home"

The silver medal swim was Ireland's fourth medal of the games.

Jason Smyth won gold in a photo finish win to secure his sixth Paralympic Gold.

And it is Ireland's second swimming medal with Ellen Keane winning gold last week.
