Nicolas Tagliafico profiled as Leeds United linked with transfer for £17.5m Ajax star

Leeds United are working on a deal to sign Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, according to reports.

The Whites are keen to bolster their options on the left side of defence this summer, with Ezgjan Alioski out of contract.

The North Macedonian is yet to pen new terms at Elland Road and with Stuart Dallas finding himself in midfield more often as the season has progressed, left-back has become a priority position.

Victor Orta has been tasked with finding a full-back who can meet the demands of Marcelo Bielsa's rigorous regime in the same manner as Luke Ayling and Dallas, previously.

With reports suggesting Tagliafico could be on his way to Leeds, here's a round-up of everything you need to know.

What's his pedigree?

Tagliafico was an important cog in the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

The 28-year-old defender has been a mainstay in the Eredivisie side's XI since joining the club in 2018, making over 100 appearances.

This campaign, he's knocked up 33 outings and has 28 international caps for Argentina and is widely acknowledged as their first-choice left-back.

Where is he linked?

The Mirror report that Leeds are chasing the defender. Given Leeds tempted Spanish internationals Rodrigo Moreno and Deigo Llorente to Elland Road last summer, it's clear the club are keen to recruit a high pedigree of player.

Who else is interested?

Previously, Manchester City, Chelsea and Barcelona have been linked with the Ajax star.

Chelsea instead opted for Ben Chilwell last summer, whilst Barcelona are on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba. Left-back has been a problem position for Man City too, given Benjamin Mendy's injury problems.

It remains to be seen if either club would reignite their interest, should Tagliafico become available this summer.

How much would he cost?

The Sun have claimed Tagliafico could be available for as little as £17.5million.

Given the fees Leeds paid out last summer, a quality over quantity approach, that doesn't seem like an unreasonable price tag for a player of his standing.

What has he said?

Taglifaico signed a contract extension with Ajax last summer until 2023 but he has left the door open to a move away from the club.

Ajax will compete for the KNVB Cup final against Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday but Taglifaico has hinted that at the end of the season, he will review his future.

“It was the right thing at the time because we have been so successful with Ajax in Europe and in the league, but now I am ready for a bigger move," he said.

“I want to win another couple of trophies, including the Dutch Cup, and after that I want to make a decision about my future.”
