Nicolas Raskin wants Rangers trophy haul as Belgian yearns for 'champion feeling' and Champions League 'dream'

New Rangers signing Nicolas Raskin could not be more clear in what he wants to achieve at Ibrox after signing on transfer deadline day - with the Belgian saying he wants to 'know what it feels like to be a champion'.

Rangers won the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21, though the rise of Ange Postecoglou's Celtic and Steven Gerrard's departure tipped the balance last season. A poor start to the season for the Dutchman has seen Rangers languish behind their rivals, though Michael Beale's incredible record since joining has pumped life and belief back into Govan.

He signed Raskin and Todd Cantwell in his first window as Gers boss to push his attacking options, and whilst there is still a nine-point gap to the league leaders, Raskin believes that the Gers are still in with a shout at the title. But perhaps more importantly, he is hungry for medals. Having never won a title at Standard Liege, the playmaker has set out to win trophies and taste Champions League football for the first time.

“I want to be champion. I want to know what it feels like to be a champion. I want to win trophies – and this club has won many trophies.

"It's very exciting to arrive and have a big cup final so close to come. We are nine points behind but we still have two games against them. So everything can change fast. If we win these two games, you never know. I think the team is confident.

“I want to play in the Champions League. Not just to play, I want to compete at this level. I have only performed in the Europa League, including against Rangers. It's a very proud day for me, I have been waiting for this since hearing about the interest from Rangers at the beginning of the months – and even earlier.

“I loved the way the manager explains how he wants to play football, passing, and creating. I was searching for a style of play close to what I know. I really want to continue with a big club with a great atmosphere and play in European competition in future.

“As a player you need confidence and the manager wants you. That is what I felt since we first spoke. I like to play under pressure, with the pressure to win. I feel ready, I got all my paperwork today so I am ready. I hope I am in the squad tomorrow. I am very excited to hopefully play tomorrow if selected by the coach.”
