Nicolas Pepe leaves Ivory Coast squad following reported injury

Nicolas Pepe has left Ivory Coast's training camp having reported for international duty carrying an injury, according to the country's football federation.

But the problem isn't thought to be a serious one.

Arsenal's record signing played the full 90 minutes in last weekend's 2-2 North London derby draw with Tottenham before linking up with The Elephants' squad in Deauville, north western France.

There are suggestions that Arsenal had agreed with the Ivory Coast that Pepe wouldn't feature in either of the friendly matches against Benin on Friday and Tunisia on Tuesday, and the Gunners didn't list him as one of the players who had gone away on international duty on their website.

A statement from the Ivory Coast FA claimed that: "Nicolas Pepe, injured in (his) club, came to report his injury on Wednesday late afternoon."

But any issue isn't said to be a serious one, and Pepe is now set to return to London Colney to work on his fitness ahead of Arsenal's trip to Watford on September 15.

Meanwhile, the former Wigan and Everton forward Arouna Kone has detailed how Pepe's background will ensure that he succeeds in the English game.

Pepe started out at French side Angers, but had to be patient before he experienced success.

“His first three seasons with Angers did not really go as planned,” .

“There were periods during that time with Angers B that he would stay away from everyone including his family just to be able focus on improving his game.

"At that time there was nothing that was certain and there were talks that he would be sent out on loan.

“For him at this stage it was all about making it to the highest level or nothing would matter.”
