Nicolas Pepe becomes first player to dribble past Virgil van Dijk in Premier League since 2018

Nicolas Pepe broke a Premier League record in his very first start for Arsenal on Saturday by becoming the first player to dribble past Virgil van Dijk since 2018.

Prior to Saturday's clash between the Gunners and Liverpool, Van Dijk hadn't been beaten for pace in his last 50 appearances in the Premier League.

The last person to beat the towering Dutchman was Mikel Merino, who dribbled round Van Dijk while playing for Newcastle in March 2018, according to Opta.

Since then the centre-back has been pretty much unbeatable, but Pepe knocked the ball past him at Anfield before getting it lost under his feet and squandering possession.

Arsenal broke the bank to sign Pepe in the summer transfer window, bringing him in for £72million from French club Lille.

He has featured in all three of Arsenal's opening fixtures, but started for the first time against Liverpool as Alexandre Lacazette was named on the bench.

Gary Neville was full of praise for the Ivory Coast international, and hailed his first half performance while providing commentary on Sky Sports.

He even suggested that Van Dijk was nervous of the defender, prompting an angry response from Liverpool fans on social media.
