Nicolas Otamedi unpunished for elbow on Leeds United's Raphinha in Brazil stalemate

Nicolas Otamendi can count his blessings not to have been sent off for a flailing elbow on Leeds United's Raphinha in a feisty affair.

The duo lined-up against each other for their World Cup qualifier in Argentina yesterday with neither side able to find a breakthrough.

The draw ensure the Seleção remain six points clear of their South American rivals at the top of the group.

But Brazil will feel aggrieved Otamendi escaped without any punishment for a clear elbow in the face of the Leeds United winger.

It's clear from a video replay that the former Manchester City defender catches Raphinha in the face, drawing blood from the Whites winger.

However, VAR did look at the incident but chose not to award a penalty kick or give Otamendi a booking for the elbow.

Fortunately for Raphinha, the injury did not force an early end to his game but was taken off the field and replaced by Ajax winger Antony in the 69th minute.

Fans have since taken to social media to question why VAR did not investigate the incident.

@pcfla11 tweeted: "Why is there VAR when u can’t make easy calls like this?"

@andrewmramnath said: "Still trying to figure out how VAR looked at that and didn't give a penalty kick and a card."
