Nicola Sturgeon won't follow Boris Johnson on 'stay alert' message ahead of Prime Minister's address

Nicola Sturgeon insists Scotland will stick to the "stay at home" message on coronavirus as her split with Westminster widens.

The First Minister spoke out this morning ahead of Boris Johnson's address to the nation at 7pm.

He is widely expected to ditch the UK government's strategy in favour of a more relaxed "stay alert, control the virus and save lives” message.

But Ms Sturgeon insists she will not risk the Scottish public by going down a similar path.

And in a sign that tensions are becoming increasingly strained between both administrations, she took to Twitter to say the first she had heard of the Prime Minister's plans was through a Sunday newspaper.

Ms Sturgeon said: "The Sunday papers is the first first I've seen of the PM's new slogan.

"It is of course for him to decide what's most appropriate for England, but given the critical point we are at in tackling the virus, #StayHomeSavelives remains my clear message to Scotland at this stage."

Tonight, the Prime Minister will set out his "road map" for how the country exits lockdown and attempts to return to normal over the coming weeks and months.

He is coming under increased pressure from within government to get the economy moving again, but knows the margin of error is paper thin with another surge in coronavirus deaths meaning another firm lockdown on the cards.
