Nicola Sturgeon was warned to toughen Scottish lockdown measures or 'risk 500 deaths a week'

Nicola Sturgeon brought in the country's new five tier alert system after she was warned Scotland could suffer 500 coronavirus deaths a week.

The Scottish Government has published modelling showing Covid deaths could have soared as high as 70 people per day by next Tuesday, if new restrictions had not been not brought in, reports The Times.

In the worst case scenario played out by the modelling, coronavirus fatalities would rise to as high as 90 a day, which is above the 84 deaths that were registered on April 15, Scotland's deadliest day yet.

The modelling system predicted that deaths would have hit around 40 per day by the end of October, and last week they had hit 37 by Thursday.

Although there are some 'promising signs' that the central belt shutdown and new five tier system could be working, because of the 'lag effect' of vulnerable people passing away from the virus, there could be more bad news to come as hospital admissions have surpassed the "worst case scenario" prediction.

Yesterday there was 1,225 Scots in hospital, with fears over the amount of occupied hospital beds in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lothian and Grampian.

Gregor Smith, Scotland’s interim chief medical officer, warned that it is still too early to see if restrictions are working to stop a surge of additional Covid deaths.

He said: “We don’t yet have the modelling projection of how the levels will affect deaths over the coming weeks.

"Those will come as we develop more data around the impact that those levels have had on the case rate.

Nicola Sturgeon added: “Any death is one too many, but there were days last week when we announced more than 30 deaths in a single day.“The levels of deaths are not what anyone should be comfortable with just now.

"They are a lag effect, but nevertheless we should never be comfortable about the level of deaths anywhere near that."
