Nicola Sturgeon warns shoppers over panic buying amid food shortage fears

Nicola Sturgeon has said there is “no need” for panic buying amid concerns of the impact of international travel bans on the UK.

A range of countries have imposed restrictions on passengers from the UK in a bid to stop the spread of a new covid strain.

France has also banned hauliers crossing the Channel, sparking fears about the impact of goods being able to come in and out of the country.

The possibility of a no-deal Brexit has led to questions being raised on the supply of food and medicines.

Speaking at her daily briefing, Nicola Sturgeon said:

“The stockpile of medicines that were being built up ahead of Bexit are in place, and so while we monitor medicine supply very carefully, we have no immediate concerns about medicine supplies. We are also assured that there is no risk to supplies of the covid vaccine.”

She added: “We have been assured by supermarkets that they are well stocked for Christmas, so there is absolutely no need for people to buy any more than you normally would.

“I would ask everybody to please support each other and shop responsibly.”

She called for the activation of no-deal Brexit plans for port disruption, backed the Scottish food sector’s requests for UK Government action to enable exports to continue and reiterated an earlier demand for the Prime Minister to seek an extension to the Brexit transition period.

Giving a further update on the daily coronavirus figures, the First Minister said the daily test positivity rate is 6%, up from 5.1% on Sunday.

A total of 113,050 people have tested positive in Scotland, up from 111,546 the previous day.

There are 1,078 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up 17 in 24 hours.
