Nicola Sturgeon warns 'put the phone down' on fake contact tracers demanding cash for tests

Fake contact tracers are trying to con worried Scots by demanding payment  for coronavirus tests.

Nicola Sturgeon warned the public not to be duped by the greedy crooks after reports emerged they are trying to exploit the pandemic for cash.

Speaking at her daily briefing today the First Minister explained: "We have become aware that some fake callers are pretending to work for Test and Protect, and are trying to con people by claiming that payment is needed for a test.

"Sadly, this reminds us there are always a small number of people - it’s a tiny minority but nevertheless they’re there - who will try to exploit any situation they can to defraud people.

"It is truly and utterly despicable, particularly at this time of crisis we are living through."

Ms Sturgeon explained that at no time will legitimate contact tracers ask for bank or credit card details - reminding the public that tests are always free.
She added: "The only thing Test and Protect staff will ask you about is where you’ve been and details of the people you’ve been in contact with.

"Fundamentally, if a person claiming to be a contact tracer is asking about things that aren’t necessary - in particular your bank details or computer passwords - then you should just put the phone down on them straight away because they are not a legitimate contact tracer.”
