Nicola Sturgeon warns Lanarkshire faces further lockdown restrictions as cases rise

Nicola Sturgeon has warned local lockdown restrictions could be extended to Lanarkshire following a rise in the number of people testing positive for Covid-19.

The First Minister said the latest figures for the area were a "particular concern" and added that health experts and ministers would meet later today to discuss a course of action.

It could mean Lanakrshire follows the case of Greater Glasgow with a ban on people meeting in each other's homes - but with local hospitality businesses remaining open.

Speaking at her daily media briefing, Sturgeon said: "I should flag up that the situation in Lanarkshire is causing some particular concern today.

"There will be expert public health discussions over the course of the day, and depending on the judgements and conclusions they arrive at, it may be that some additional restrictions will have to be applied there. We will, however, keep people updated."

The SNP leader said any announcement on further local lockdown would be made later today, if needed.

She said it was "possible" additional restrictions could be implemented today but added it may take place over the weekend.

New national guidelines on social meet-ups were announced by the Scottish Government yesterday, with no more than six people from a maximum of two households being the limit in homes or pubs or restaurants.
