Nicola Sturgeon volunteers at vaccination centre as she urges Scots to get 'boosted by the Bells'

Nicola Sturgeon has completed a volunteering session at a covid vaccination centre as she urged Scots to get "boosted by the Bells".

The First Minister joined NHS staff at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre today to see first-hand how the vital booster programme is being rolled-out.

The Scottish and UK Governments both want as many adults as possible to receive a third dose of a covid vaccine by midnight on Hogmanay.

It comes as data shows the hospitalisation rate is 10 times lower among adults in Scotland who have received a booster shot than those who have only been double vaccinated.

Sturgeon joined staff this morning to assist in volunteering duties at one of the Capital's largest vaccination centres - but modestly downplayed her usefulness.

"Did a (media-free) ‘volunteering’ session at the EICC vaccine centre earlier," she tweeted.

"Not sure I was much help but it gave me good insight into how it all works (v efficiently) and to say a massive thank you to everyone doing truly heroic work."

She added: "Many thanks to everyone - staff, volunteers, those being vaccinated - who spoke to me at the EICC this morning, and to every member of every vaccination team across the country. We owe you all so much."

The First Minister made the visit one day after confirming businesses and football clubs face a new round of restrictions.

Pubs and restaurants must reintroduce social distancing measures from December 27 while big sporting events will effectively be played behind closed doors for at least three weeks.

The SNP leader insisted the measures were needed to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, which was detected last month and has ruined Christmas plans for thousands.

The latest daily statistics show Scotland has recorded 11 new coronavirus deaths and 2,434 positive tests in the last 24 hours.

The daily positivity rate stood at 13 per cent, down from 14.9 per cent on Tuesday.

There were 536 people in hospital with recently confirmed covid on Tuesday, an increase of 21 on the day before, and 40 people were in intensive care, up three.

So far, 4,375,588 people have received their first dose of a covidvaccination, 4,000,171 have received their second dose, and 2,708,761 have received a third dose or booster.
