Nicola Sturgeon urges Scots who aren't already wearing face coverings to do so

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has urged people to wear a face covering in shops and in other places where social distancing is not possible.

The advice is not mandatory, however the Scottish Government have been encouraging people to do so for some weeks.

Last week, transport secretary Michael Matheson said anyone travelling on public transport would be "expected" to wear some kind of covering.

At her daily coronavirus briefing today, Nicola Sturgeon once again asked Scots who weren't currently wearing a face covering to consider doing so.

"Wear a face covering when you are in shops or on public transport.

"I want to make a direct appeal to you here; if you haven't been wearing a face covering so far, I am asking you to please think about doing so now.

"It can offer some protection to other people," Nicola Sturgeon said, explaining that you could protect the health of others if you have Covid-19 and are unaware.

The First Minister also stressed the importance of other simple hygiene measures such as washing hands regularly and using hand sanitiser when this was not possible.

Sturgeon also reminded people to avoid touching hard surfaces, as well as the importance of closely following lockdown rules.

Addressing some reports that one metre of distance is sufficient to stop the spread of coronavirus, the First Minister urged Scots to continue to adhere to the current guidance of two metres.

Nicola Sturgeon said: “You might be reading or hearing in the media today some voices saying that one metre is sufficient, so I want to take the opportunity today to stress that the clear and the strong advice from the Scottish Government is to stay two metres apart from those in other households.”

The First Minister also asked those who have not been wearing face coverings while in shops or using public transport to consider doing so.

She added: “It can offer some protection to other people, it protects them from you transmitting the virus to them without knowing it.

“It’s something that we can all do to protect one another.”
