Nicola Sturgeon urges Scots to mark Remembrance Sunday at home this weekend

Nicola Sturgeon has urged Scots to mark Remembrance Sunday at home this weekend as lockdown stops the usual outdoor services from taking place.

The First Minister will lay a wreath at the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle this weekend in a small service closed to the public.

Wreaths will also be laid at the Cenotaph in Glasgow's George Square but there will be none of the usual crowds in the city centre.

The SNP leader has instead urged Scots to stand on their doorsteps and observe a two minute silence at 11am on Sunday.

Speaking at her regular media briefing, Sturgeon said: "Because of the global pandemic commemorations this year have to be very different to normal.

"Areas of Scotland under levels two, three or four outdoor events and gatherings are not permitted. That obviously means many local and national events will not be able to take place or will be significantly scaled back in terms of numbers.

"This is necessary to curtail the virus but it does not and it should not mean Remembrance Sunday go unmarked."

She added: "I would encourage everybody from the safety of their own doorsteps to observe the two minutes silence both.

"That will be an important way of honouring all those who died in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts, and allows all of us to show our respect for the continuing service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces."
